Native American Food Sovereignty
Elena Terry is the Executive Chef/Founder of Wild Bearies, a non-profit community outreach catering organization that supports participants to overcome alcohol and other drug abuse issues or emotional traumas. One of her goals has been to develop mentorship programs that help build stronger communities within the Indigenous Food Sovereignty movement. Developing the Native American Food Sovereignty Associations Food and Culinary mentorship program in 2020, Elena emphasizes the healing nature of working with traditional indigenous ingredients while building community. Tune in to learn more about:
Wild Bearies and their mission to heal through real food and bringing communities together
The power of how ancestral knowledge of food and animals is being passed from one generation to the next
The cooperation with the Indigenous Seed Savers Network as well as Dream of Wild Health in continuing the stewardship of ancestral seeds
The story of the bean seed that came back to the tribe
The memories of her great-grandmother cooking over on open fire and the stories that were shared;
Learning how to butcher from her own grandmother;
What decolonized food is
Elena's philosophy that while food is medicine, the real medicine is in the creation and the relationships we build around food.

The Activism and the Imprisonment of Jamil Al-Amin
Heather Gray interviews Professor Emeritus of Sociology Dr. Harry Edwards about his association with the civil rights activist Jamil Al-Amin.
Jamil grew up as H. Rap Brown. He was a strong athlete in school, was active in the civil rights movement, including Freedom Summer, and became Chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.
In 1971, Brown was arrested and imprisoned for robbery. While incarcerated, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Jamil Al-Amin. In 2000, he was accused and convicted of shooting two Fulton County deputy sheriffs. He is currently in prison serving a life sentence. Since his imprisonment, another man has testified to being responsible for the shootings.
In the interview, Dr. Edwards gives credit to Al-Amin for reframing the civil rights struggle as a human rights struggle, talking about what that means, and why it's important.

Privatized Feminism, Commodification of Love
Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Hochschild in dialogue
Just before Labor Day 2022, renowned US journalist and writer Barbara Ehrenreich died. In 2000, she was about to release the book Nickel and Dimed, about going underground as a domestic worker. She and sociologist Arlie Hochschild were writing about international capitalisms effect on women's livelihoods, including the experience of poor women who travel to more developed countries for work and have to leave their own kids behind. Excerpts from this lecture are courtesy of The Women's International Newsgathering Service.

Things Moving, People Doing
Somehow the things we need get from there to here, but it's not just about the things; *people* make the global supply chain work.
Here are stories of some of them, from a sea captain whose first working voyage had his knees knocking, to pedal-powered trash haulers, to residents of a tiny city at the nexus of multiple supply routes.
Voices of the global supply chain

Safer Than Childbirth
The story of a woman who lived--and died of an abortion--in the mid-1800s, just when abortion was outlawed for the first time in the United States
Author Tamara Dean presents Safer Than Childbirth, the story of a woman who "lived and died of an abortion" in the mid-1800s, just when abortion was outlawed for the first time in the United States.
Tamara describes how women carried out abortions when it was commonplace in earlier times, before it was outlawed. She traces the history of laws about abortion and the origins of the anti-abortion efforts in the US.
