Religious Liberty vs LGBTQ Equality - part 21

OutCaster Isha continues her conversation with civil rights attorney Jennifer C. Pizer about the social movement that focuses on LGBTQ people as a threat, religious doctrine cited in cases regarding constitutional law, the Equality Act, the Fairness Act, the protective reach of federal law, including LGBTQ figures in school curriculum like Alan Turing and Harvey Milk, and research from psychologists and social scientists on the fact that preventing young people from becoming LGBTQ by withholding information does not work.

Jennifer C. Pizer is the Senior Counsel and Director of Law and Policy for Lambda Legal, the country's oldest and largest legal organization seeking full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT people and everyone living with HIV.

A Tale of Two Diasporas

Two stories of encounters between Ukrainians and Russians in the Diaspora. In Abu Dhabi Ukrainians and Russians encounter each other, leading to tensions. In Uzbekistan, refugees who are both Russian and Ukrainian, find each other for solace and mutual help and rebuilding.

Julia Tymoshenko is a Ukrainian reporter, communications expert, and marketing executive. She studied at the Abu Dhabi and New York City campuses of New York University, where she studied social and public policy. Her research led her to do ethnographic fieldwork in Abu Dhabi, which allowed her to observe Ukrainians there, and their relations with Russians.

YouTube vlogger Konstantin Samoilov was a successful professional in Russia where he lived with his family until he left, last fall. He fled when mobilization was announced to recruit Russians as soldiers for the invasion of Ukraine. He tells the story of how refugees face losing everything. Samoilov started and leads the Tashkent International Breakfast Club, which regularly brings together hundreds of people at a cafe in the capital of Uzbekistan to help each other rebuild their lives.

Class Can't Do the Work of Race

After the recent Supreme Court decision to remove affirmative action placement from universities, #RaceClass explores the intricacies of race and racism in America. In our national affirmative action conversation: Why can't class-based policies do the work of race-based policies? Our short answer: because racism transcends class.

The Origin of Juneteenth

June 19, 1865 marks the origin of Juneteenth, on Galveston Island. The official celebration began in 1866, commemorating the freedom of African people from settler colonialism, 2 1/2 years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the legislation, making Juneteenth the 12th federal holiday. Its the first new federal holiday since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.

When Food Is More Than Food

First Tsameret visits Zingerman's Delicatessen, a flagship fine food store and destination of Anne Arbor's cultural life. Tessie Ives Wilson, their Events Coordinator, describes their traditional Jewish food as well as food from other folk traditions around the world and local recipes, providing a rich experience.

Noting, however, that good food is essential for all of the community, not just for those who can afford to consume Zingerman's products, Tsameret visits a program started by the deli's employees, The Food Gatherers. Lauren Grossman communications coordinator, discusses how they provide good food to those needing it and how this builds a stronger community in their county.

The Conflict Between Our Biological Heritage and the Speed of Our Lives

Not so long before the common use of devices operated by electricity, our lives were generally more calm. And as humans we have a biological heritage of being curiosity driven, reward seeking and harm avoiding creatures.

The conflict that has evolved between our biological heritage and the demand driven economy in the United States is the essence of a book entitled American Mania, When More is Not Enough. The author, Dr. Peter C. Whybrow, is a professor of psychiatry and bio-behavioral science, and director of the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California at Los Angeles. He speaks with Radio Curious host Barry Vogel.

This interview was recorded in 2005

Chuck D & Rosa Clemente: Hip Hop's Unfinished Revolution

Chuck D of Public Enemy famously called Hip Hop "the Black CNN". As Hip-Hop celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, Laura talks with him, and Bronx native Rosa Clemente, about Hip Hop's impact on music, dance, art, fashion and media-making, and asks where the Hip Hop revolution stands today.

Clemente, an award-winning organizer and scholar-activist, is known for her expertise in Afro-Latinx identity, fighting police violence and Hip-Hop feminism. Chuck D, the leader and co-founder of the legendary group Public Enemy, is a social activist and digital music pioneer who served as Executive Producer of the BBC series now streaming on PBS, Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World.

In this episode, they explore the impact of Hip Hop and its role in today's social justice movements. Plus, a commentary from Laura on unfinished revolutions.

Slow Looking and Visible Thinking with Claire Bown

Claire Bown teaches people how to connect more with art. Her guide "How to Look at Art (Slowly)" is a rich compendium of curiosity practices.

Claire's professional focus is museums, but she'd be the first to tell you: the skills she shares are useful anywhere...

"As adults, we don't spend too long in observation. We tend to want to jump straight in to interpreting and what we think. It's actually quite useful for us to take a step back, and just dwell in observation for a little bit, because those details that we notice will help fuel our curiosity."

Claire Bown is founder and principal of Thinking Museum. She teaches people techniques to help them connect with art.
