On Tuesday June 25, masses of Gen Z Kenyans demonstrated in Mombasa and succeeded in stopping the 2024 Finance Bill that would have put an extremely unfair burden on the young and poor, in the name of paying off international loans. Unified across any divisions of party or tribe, the young called out government waste and corruption and called for President Ruto to resign. Some measures are being implemented, but the government has retaliated - sending police and military to kidnap, injure and and kill young activists. The struggle goes on.

Maxine Matilpi is an indigenous woman from British Columbia, Canada, who is also a lawyer and the Program Lead for West Coast Environmental Law's RELAWproject - Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air and Water. She explains that Indigenous Law is based in indigenous stories and traditions, and differs from the Aboriginal Law imposed by Canada. And she tells stories about this unique, groundbreaking project and how it is intended to be used by communities to defend their environment.

07:00--7:30:  WINGS  Parliament Women : Leading for Women's and Children's Health 

The International Parliamentary Union. IPU is an organization currently comprising 180 of the 190 national parliaments currently functioning in the world. One of their activities is ranking countries by the percentage of women in their legislative bodies. As of April 24, 2024, Rwanda still held the top spot, followed by Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico - Australia was in 32nd place - Canada, 65th. The US was tied with Iraq for 72nd place. These percentages have a lot to do with the countries' electoral systems - as Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and Irish Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee explain. New Zealand was ranked in 16th place for percentage of women in Parliament, and Ireland [103rd] one hundred and third. But even at just 37%, Irish women have influence in Parliament. The two women politicians explain the special barriers that women in politics so often face, and the how and why of examples of legislative successes from their respective countries.

Berit As, now 96 years old, has been a psychologist, a politician, a professor, and an activist - but she began her professional career as a statistician. In this interview, she tells how she introduced gender-disaggregation into Norway's accident statistics, and her conclusions about how boys and girls were socialized with respect to risk-taking - and about the establishment's resistance to recognizing that women were safer workers and drivers than men. The feminist university that Berit As initiated has become a research arm of Norway's university system.

On May 29, 2024, WINGS attended an online press briefing, titled War and Climate Change, hosted by Covering Climate Now - a collaboration of Columbia Journalism Review, The Nation, and The Guardian.

 Ellie Kinney is a Campaign Coordinator for the Conflict and Environment Observatory. The UK-based non-governmental organization monitors and raises awareness of the environmental dimensions of armed conflicts and military activities.

Dr. Neta C. Crawford is a political science professor at the University of Oxford. She served on the governing Board of the United Nations Academic Council. Her most recent book, published by MIT Press, is titled "The Pentagon, Climate Change, and War: Charting the Rise and Fall of U.S. Military Emissions".

Rawan Damen is Director-General of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), based in Amman, Jordan. She was previously a senior editor at Al Jazeera for 10 years, commissioning documentaries from across the Arab world. At Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, she has opened a regional platform for fact-checkers, created an Arabic platform for whistleblowers, and led the publication of hundreds of investigations. The organization does extensive training of journalists in research and personal safety, sponsors research projects, and helps prepare the results for publication.

07:00-07:30 WINGS: Murder in the WAC  Memorial Day Special - but good any day 

In 1947, in Tokyo, 500 women were dishonorably discharged from the US Army on the charge of homosexuality. Murder in the WAC is a one-woman show written and performed by Pat Bond, about how lesbians were recruited into the US military during the war, and after the war expelled. There are a few mentions of the word sh-t that have had their vowels silenced for radio. Also a euphemistic reference to lesbian sex. This is comedy, but with a tragic ending. 
Pat Bond (1925-1990) was an actress and a popular writer and performer of one-woman lesbian-related comedy shows in the United States. She was also a member of the Women's Army Corps near the end of World War II.

Acclaimed poet and associate professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Rita Wong investigates the relationships between contemporary poetics, social justice, ecology, and decolonization. She focuses on poetics of water.

07:00.07:30 WINGS Red Rosa (Mayday Special) Life and work of Rosa Luxemburg, 1871-1919 

Rosa Luxemburg was one of the most influential political theorists of her day. She lived from 1871 until 1919, when she was assassinated by the newly-elected socialist government of Germany. Luxemburg had written that socialism by gradual reform of the capitalist-oriented system would never provide for the needs of workers, that only revolution could do the job. She was strongly in favour of the innovation of May First as International Labour Day. In many countries, it's still a national holiday - but it originated as a day for workers across the globe to stop work and show their collective power.

Rosa Luxemburg's life was complicated, but one author boiled it down to a popular book, Red Rosa: A Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg. Barbara Alice Mann, Ph.D., is a longtime Professor of Humanities at the University of Toledo. Among her numerous books are Daughters of Mother Earth (paperback as Make a Beautiful Way) and Iroquoian Women: The Gantowisas. She is an Ohio Bear Clan Seneca, community member and lives in her Ohio homeland. This talk was her keynote speech to the event A (M)otherworld Is Possible in Toronto, which was embedded in the 2nd World Congress on Matriarchal Studies, 2009. She contrasts the all-inclusive indigenous world with hierarchically imposed culture.

Dr. Heide Goettner-Abendroth, while on a tour of North America in 2013, discussed her latest book translated into English: "Matriarchal Societies: Studies on Indigenous Cultures Across the Globe." She was interviewed in Canada by Kristin Schwartz. The author explained that matriarchy does not mean rule by women, but rather that mothers/mother figures are the central organizers of these societies that prioritize the welfare of children, consensus decision-making, and role divisions based upon individuals' gender role choices rather than on biological sex lines. 

Heide Goettner-Abendroth, German feminist and scholar, a founder of the modern matriarchal studies movement, and of the International Academy for Modern Matriarchal Studies and Matriarchal Spirituality (HAGIA).

A documentary about welfare rights activism 

Storming Caesar's Palace is a 2023 documentary film about welfare rights activism in the US and the state of Nevada. Producer Hazel Gurland talks to interviewer Anne Lewis about the work of early African-American activist Ida B. Wells, who fought against racist and sexist "tropes" in American society, and about Gurland's desire to expose the struggle against similar racist and sexist tropes in our own times. Excerpts from the film document the outrageous and brilliant tactics that Ruby Duncan and other activists brought to bear on the struggle for not only rights but survival, during the 1960s and '70s.

                              Organizers describe their national campaign in international context 

The African Union has declared full support for Palestine, condemned Israel's actions in Gaza, and requested its 55 member states "to end all direct and indirect trade, scientific and cultural exchanges with Israel." But Kenya's government has pledged solidarity with Israel, and met large pro-Palestine demonstrations in the capital Nairobi with tear gas and arrests.

On February 24th, 2024, hundreds of people took to the streets in Kenya's second-largest city Mombasa, to "walk for Palestine" - among them, women and children carrying placards condemning the ongoing killing. Why do people whose first language is not English have different accents? How do North Americans' reactions to that affect the immigrants' lives? How can North Americans learn to listen better and with respect instead of stigma?
